Since many people will travel separately, there will not be a fixed itinerary, but please contact Thijs for any questions or travel coordination efforts. The following general advice applies.
There is a regional train from Aachen Hbf/West to Heerlen, where you can transfer to the Dutch train system.
Schedules and tickets on ns.nl.
When exiting the train station in Leiden, you need to scan your ticket at the gate. If you have a digital ticket (QR code), you have to use specific gates with a QR scanner, which are usually the wider gates, such as the handicap/wheelchair exit.
If you are using the OV-card, make sure to check in in Aachen. Checking in/out is done by using the card poles on the platform. Switch from Arriva to NS in Heerlen, otherwise you could be fined! Simply hold your card in front of the Arriva scanner (white/blue) to check out, then the NS scanner (yellow) to check in again.
From Leiden Centraal, you can walk to the Gorlaeus building (25 minutes) or take one of many buses. Make sure to check a travel planner to find the earliest one.Â
